Bring light into the darkness with the Black Diamond Orbit LED Lantern

orbitpng 80x80 Licht ins Dunkel bringen mit der Black Diamond Orbit LED LaterneEverybody knows it: It has set up his tent after a strenuous tour, still sits a little out there in the dark and studied the map or read a book. The whole time you have the head lamp on his head and even the recently introduced to us Petzl e Lite eventually disrupts. Particularly annoying is it, when trying to entertain and is dazzled by the headlamp of the other. Because sometimes one wants a lantern?

I have been at least, but until now always shunned the high weight and usually quite bulky when packed by kerosene lamps or other electrical solutions. The guys were kind of Black Diamond, I provide the solution to these problems are available. The Black Diamond LED Laterne Orbit.

Small and lightweight LED lantern – Black Diamond Orbit

The LED lantern weighs just 84g without batteries (4x AAA) which are likely to be the hardest on her. Even the packing size is perfectly fine for me: Just 10 cm is the lamp high and has a diameter of 5,7 cm. So that it disappears without problems in my small backpack for weekend trips.

To shed some more light on the matter, you have to fold out the lantern only – thereby 3,5 cm is higher – and adjust the dimmer the desired intensity. The reflector system in the interior of the lantern-lit provides a radius of 2 M.

The thrifty 1 Watt LED ensures, that one depending on the setting 10 until 24 Hours of light has. So one must also take on long trips only one charge batteries. There is also the Black Diamond NRG2 Battery Kit which you can also use.

In my baggage, the Black Diamond is definitely at the next longer tour. Who does not count every gram and would like to enjoy this night in camp a little more comfort, meets with the Black Diamond Orbit in my opinion the right decision.

  1. Hey,

Once again thanks for the detailed report, but varies slightly between the Apollo and the Orbit, while I like the lighter orbit very well.

Would have got a great saving in weight to my Markill Peak Illuminator.

  3. My last purchase was as a camping lantern with the name "Black Diamond".
The name sounds so very good at, unfortunately, does not consider the product as good as the name.
Normally, expensive = good, Here, however, seems not to apply this truism

On the packaging so what is of 60 Hours light and 3 Watt LED, But out of the box I had to realize, that the lamp 60 light hours only in the weakest dimming, in the strongest level only 15 Hours. So with nothing 5 Nights with an emergency battery pack. Ever seen a bad sign.

The thing is next to the dimmer light intensity or a low battery indicator, ie green for full charge, Yellow for 50 % Residual energy and red for 30 % Restenergie. This is thus an advantage. You should be able to roughly assess, how long the lamp brightness can still donate.

Next, the lamp can be pulled, which is evident in the pictures. Thus, the battery light to transport space

If the lamp with the three bars just unfolded on the floor, for example, around a circle of 2m diameter illuminated. Through the built-in lamp reflector so creates a cone of light, the tip of the roof light is downward, and then forms the cone described.

One problem is, that the built-in lamp reflectors concentrated the light rather throw on the floor, so that outside this circle, or reigns up above the light cone of darkness. I am of the opinion, that cooking next to or above the light cone is a bit tedious, if you want to see, what to cook for there or does.
Bicycle tire repair, I see it as extremely difficult to even. Certainly, the better illumination when the lamp is higher, but that is in the open field a little difficult if nothing is close. And to have a third hand would be considered not normal, thus separates this solution for most of (Men here could indeed have a third leg, but.. Na ja, we have these awards at once Page / Sorry, but the experience with this annoying light  huge hard-earned money thrown out the window).

Another disadvantage of the lamp is the frosted glass version of the retractable plastic. Surely no one is so dazzled that looks directly into the light, But the thing is to illuminate the area in particular and nothing else. This glass of milk is much wasted light output. Another minus the lamp, that looks not just on efficiency.
In comparison with the laser LED Flashlight Model "tactical" with only one AA cell that separates light from extremely poor.

For this reason, I can not recommend you to buy these very expensive but a little light. Maybe the better assessment, when the milk glass with the Dremmel (Minihandbohrmaschine) and a polishing cup is polished to a review, but this is time consuming. In my opinion, should be operational products directly from the box and must be brought not by the user to scratch.
